Preparing The presentation

Answering the Questions

2. If anyone, who is responsible for Kiowa’s death? Why? How does “the boy” fit into this idea of responsibility, and the story itself?
Jimmy Cross thinks that Kiowas death is his fault because he is the leader of the group and feels like that if he didnt lead the men to this area and put them in that situation, Kiowa would never have died.

3. Why does O’Brien return to the place of Kiowa’s death? Has anything changed – for the narrator, for the people in Vietnam, Vietnam itself?
~ O`Brien went back to the place of Kiowas death because he wanted to remember kiowa and see what it was like for them, and ti see the journey that they endured

4. O’Brien mentions the deaths of several of the soldiers before he gives detailed accounts of how and when they died in later stories. “In the Field” and “Field Trip” expand the reader’s understanding of Kiowa’s death and the narrator’s reaction to the events that took place in the field. The story stories are interrupted by a very short story, “Good
Form,” in which O’Brien provides the reader with factual information about where he served and where most of the stories take place: The Quang Ngai Province. Why might that matter? Research materials about the province. (Pay attention to the timeframe:
O’Brien served from late 1968–1970.)

5. How do the stories help in understanding the frustration and/or disillusionment of so many U.S. troops who fought in Vietnam?

The stories help because they are actual true stories, and the unfortunate things that had happened to the U.S troops.

6. What kind of multi-media, documents, and sources can you use to make your presentation a solid, coherent, in-depth, and challenging? Keep in mind that you have to use the book, no matter what.

I think that our group is going to use a powerpoint presentation, to present the information about the chapters. Also we will keep the class challenged by possibly giving a quiz.

7. How will you ensure that the audience participates attentively throughout? Do you want to assign a blog or homework (to be done in advance or after your session)?

To make sure the class is interested and keeps participating, our group will make the presentation interesting and fun for the class.

Playing Teacher (#17)

In my group I am working with Jaz and Alexis, and I am very excited to reverse the roll and see what its like to be the teacher. I expect that everyone will be interested in our presentation and that we can teach others about what we have learned ourselves as well as help them understand other point of views that we can come up with by analyzing these chapters and by looking at them more in depth. My group will all work together to create ideas and activities based off the main points and importance of our section, we will be able to feed of one another thoughts resulting in the best possible presentation we can preform. I expect each of the students to not be bored and not only learn something but take away more than they expected to. I also expect that the teacher will find our presentation insightful and full of knowledge :)

Shaping of the world

I believe in good and bad, and right from wrong. It is true that shaping is a way that most people look at the world, as so do I. At the same time I also think that the idea of seperating good and bad is very closed minded, because when you think about it what necesirally is right and what is wrong? Grendels view of the world and shaping causes him to be angry and bitter, a way most people dont want to live. If doing one wrong thing in your lifetime causes you to be categorized as "bad" you could be missing out on what someone has to offer. Not being open to the fact that someone can reedem themself causes people to be stuck up and regretful. People deserve second chances so who am I or anyone for that matter to label someone good or bad? Shaping is true but also a very broad way of thinking and allthough some people live by it, everyone deciphers it in their own personal way that makes sense to ourselves.A part of me seperates the good from bad, but at the same time im not quite sure how to define either one. To live a life  believing someone who has once done bad is forever bad isnt living at all. We all make mistakes in this lifetime but its how we grow from it and take that experience that makes us the people that we are. I have always supported forgiveness and looking past things people have done that i dont necessarily agree with, so who am i to distinguish right from wrong?

Bring me Along

crochet baby blanket

In a few months i will be off to college and in the process of packing there will be a select few things that i will make sure to bring along. Firstly i will pack a picture of my family because above everything else i will miss them terribly. A picture of us all together will always spark those memories in my head and get me through the times that I get really homesick. Also i will pack a new pillow i received this year for my birthday from my little sister. The pillow was my favorite gift and stitched across it was the phrase " A sister is a forever friend". When I leave, my little sister will always be apart of me and having the pillow as a friendly reminder to check in with her will keep me close to her. Lastly I would bring my childhood blanket that ive had ever since i was a baby. The blanket reminds me of everything ive been through and how having it with me provides a sense of comfort and care. The best feeling in the world is cuddling up to my blanket after a long day and falling asleep with it my arms.

After a Rainstorm

After a Rainstorm
By Robert Wrigley
Because I have come to the fence at night,
the horses arrive also from their ancient stable.
They let me stroke their long faces, and I note
in the light of the now-merging moon

how they, a Morgan and a Quarter, have been
by shake-guttered raindrops
spotted around their rumps and thus made
Appaloosas, the ancestral horses of this place.

Maybe because it is night, they are nervous,
or maybe because they too sense
what they have become, they seem
to be waiting for me to say something

to whatever ancient spirits might still abide here,
that they might awaken from this strange dream,
in which there are fences and stables and a man
who doesn’t know a single word they understand.

What I like about this poem?
I like this poem because I really enjoy horses. It makes me think of the animals in a magical way. It almost seems like a fantasy world where I can picture the animals running across the field. The rain creates a peaceful mood of mystery where everything seems to happen in a fog, so although it is not very clear you can see what is truly happening.

1.to whatever ancient spirits might still abide here,
that they might awaken from this strange dream,
-I like this line because it makes me think this poem is magical by using the words spirits and dreams, it creates a picture in your head

2. Maybe because it is night, they are nervous,
or maybe because they too sense
what they have become
-This line gives personality and human like characteristics to the horses which adds to the magical feeling

3. They let me stroke their long faces, and I note
in the light of the now-merging moon
-This line allows us to picture the scene of petting the horses in the moonlight in the background and just feeling very at peace with the whole situation.

A Hero

All though when thinking of heros it is typical to think of superman, but there are real heros also. Today we here of stories such as rescuing people and putting themselves into situations of danger in order to help someone else.
Also a lot of modern day heros consists of doctors, typically in todays age we hear most of or news and stories from the television, talk shows, newspappers, and often times over the radio. These heros show people that they care more about others than themself and that they would go out of their way for someone elses safety. Heros are nice genuine caring people that dont want the attention or praise but like ti di these deeds from the goodness of their heart. Beowulf shows traits of the perfect hero. Beowulf is first characterized as a hero in his youth as a great warrior then 50 years later grows to be a king hero. He shows great strength and courage throughout the his life. Beowulf also shows great qualities of an extraordinary king in the sense of loyalty courtesy and pride. Beowulf shows all these qualities when saving Grendels mother from the dragon.

After Apple-Picking

After Apple-PickingBy Robert Frost

My long two-pointed ladder's sticking through a tree
Toward heaven still,
And there's a barrel that I didn't fill
Beside it, and there may be two or three
Apples I didn't pick upon some bough.
But I am done with apple-picking now.
Essence of winter sleep is on the night,
The scent of apples: I am drowsing off.
I cannot rub the strangeness from my sight
I got from looking through a pane of glass
I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough
And held against the world of hoary grass.
It melted, and I let it fall and break.
But I was well
Upon my way to sleep before it fell,
And I could tell
What form my dreaming was about to take.
Magnified apples appear and disappear,
Stem end and blossom end,
And every fleck of russet showing clear.
My instep arch not only keeps the ache,
It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round.
I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend.
And I keep hearing from the cellar bin
The rumbling sound
Of load on load of apples coming in.
For I have had too much
Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch,
Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall.
For all
That struck the earth,
No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble,
Went surely to the cider-apple heap
As of no worth.
One can see what will trouble
This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is.
Were he not gone,
The woodchuck could say whether it's like his
Long sleep, as I describe its coming on,
Or just some human sleep.

What I like:
To me this poem talks about at the end of a long day of apple picking, the narrator is tired and thinks about his day. He has felt sleepy and even trance-like since the early morning. He feels himself beginning to dream but cannot escape the thought of his apples. He wonders if it is the normal sleep of a tired man or the deep winter sleep of death. I feel this poem emphasizes the sense of moving between a waking and dream-like state. I like this poem because i generally like apple picking and find it to be a lot of fun. I can also relate to the idea of sleeping in and out of dreams between thoughts. Having the idea of unconscious thought while I am sleeping makes me think of previous things that have happen to me.

1. I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough
And held against the world of hoary grass.
-This creates a vivid image of the beginning of the day and showing the excitin fresh start of the day.

2. Of the great harvest I myself desired.
-This shows what the person really want, it creates a sense of passion because now everything seems to have meaning.

3. Essence of winter sleep is on the night,
The scent of apples: I am drowsing off.
- It makes me think of the scent of apples and the peacefullness of falling asleep and dreamin of things that you desire.
